The Box Jellyfish

Do humans have an impact on the life of the jellyfish species? Impact meaning having a strong effect either positively or negatively.

Humans are actually having a positive impact on the jellyfish , by having a negative impact on the world's oceans.

With humans overfishing the world’s oceans this has had a positive impact on jellyfish species.

With the commercial overfishing of sardines ,herring and anchovies this has left the jellyfish without competition for their food.Jellyfish species like to consume the larvae of the popular commercially fished species therefore this has stopped the recovery of these overfished species.

The bluefin tuna is one of the jellyfishes main predators but it unfortunately it has been overfished to the point of near extinction.Sea turtles are also natural predators of jellyfish but they are also under threat by humans polluting the ocean particularly the leatherback and loggerhead which are now endangered species. Jellyfish are blooming due to the rise in the oceans temperature caused by global warming.

As the jellyfish bloom this is causing a negative impact for humans. Such as clogging up the water intake of nuclear power plants which has caused power shutdowns .They also have affected tourism by overtaking popular beaches and forcing beaches to close, like the popular Bondi beach (in Australia) in January 2019.

All of this has a financial impact on people.

Scientists now say that we are in a jellyfish apocalypse.

Which is caused by the impact humans are having on the jellyfish habitat. To get the population of the jellyfish back to its natural state. Humans need to stop overfishing , polluting the oceans and stop global warming. This is the only way we will be able to stop the cycle of impact.
